Food usually takes about 24 to 48 hours to move through the entire digestive system, although the timing can vary from person to person. In some healthy adults, the full process may be shorter or may take up to about 72 hours.
After eating, solid food generally stays in the stomach for around 2 to 4 hours. It then moves through the small intestine over the next 3 to 6 hours, where most nutrients are absorbed.
The longest part of the process usually happens in the colon. Food waste may remain there for 20 to 50 hours or longer before being passed as stool. Meal size, food type, bowel habits, time of day, and certain health conditions can all affect how quickly this happens.
A slower or faster digestion time is not always a problem by itself. However, ongoing constipation, diarrhea, frequent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, or a major change in bowel habits should be evaluated by a gastroenterologist. Avoid using laxatives or other digestive medicines regularly without medical advice.
