How long can you go without pooping?

“I usually poop every day, but it has been several days and I am starting to feel bloated and uncomfortable. How long can you go without pooping?”

There is no single number of days that is safe for everyone to go without pooping. Some people naturally have bowel movements less often, but having fewer than three bowel movements in a week may be a sign of constipation, especially if stools are hard, painful, or difficult to pass.

How you feel matters as much as the number of days. Constipation symptoms may include straining, bloating, or the feeling that stool has not fully passed. A sudden change from your usual bowel pattern deserves more attention than a pattern that has always been normal for you.

Seek urgent medical care if you cannot poop or pass gas and also have constant or worsening belly pain, vomiting, fever, rectal bleeding, blood in the stool, or increasing abdominal swelling. These symptoms may point to a blockage or another problem that needs prompt assessment.

For mild constipation, drinking enough fluids, eating fiber, staying active, and not ignoring the urge to go may help. Do not take laxatives regularly without medical advice. See a primary care doctor or gastroenterologist if constipation keeps returning, affects daily life, or lasts longer than about three weeks.
