When can I have sex after a hysterectomy?

“It’s been about two months since my hysterectomy, and my doctor said I could start having sex again. But I’m a little nervous because I’ve heard it can be painful or feel different afterward. Is that normal, and how long does it usually take to feel comfortable again?”

Sex after a hysterectomy is generally not recommended for about 40 to 60 days, depending on how well each person recovers. It’s important to wait for guidance from the gynecologist or surgeon during post-surgery follow-up appointments before resuming sexual activity.

After returning to sex, some women may experience pain or discomfort during intercourse (dyspareunia). In most cases, this improves with time, open communication, and support from a partner. Only in rare situations is another procedure needed to correct the problem.

The chances of discomfort during sex are higher following a total hysterectomy, in which the ovaries are also removed. In these cases, a doctor may prescribe a vaginal estrogen cream to promote healing and relieve symptoms such as burning, dryness, itching, or pain during sex.

If discomfort continues, it’s important to consult a gynecologist to determine the cause and recommend the most appropriate treatment.
