What does early stage toenail fungus look like?

“I noticed a small yellowish spot near the edge of one of my toenails, and it looks a little different than the others. I’m not sure if it’s just from shoes or something else. What does early stage toenail fungus look like?”

Early-stage toenail fungus usually looks like a small white, yellow, or yellow-orange spot or streak near the tip or side of the nail. The affected area may appear slightly cloudy or discolored, with subtle changes in the nail’s appearance.

Other early signs include slight scaling or debris under the nail, flaky or powdery white patches on its surface, and edges that begin to lift away from the skin.

Although less common, some forms of toenail fungus may affect the area closer to the base of the nail. As the infection progresses, thickening, crumbling, and changes in nail shape usually become more noticeable. Learn more about nail fungus and its possible causes.

However, these signs can also occur with injuries, psoriasis, and other nail conditions. A dermatologist can examine the nail and perform tests if needed to determine whether the changes are caused by toenail fungus before recommending treatment.
