Corn silk is a traditional herbal medicine which can be used to treat:

Corn silk has a diuretic effect, which increases urine production and output, and consequently helps reduce blood pressure. Some studies show that this medicinal plant can also lower blood sugar levels and also restore the balance of natural but bacteria flora, promoting regular bowel movements.

Corn silk contains substances such as proteins, vitamins, carbohydrates, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and sodium. Corn silk is most often consumed in tea form, which is made from dried corn silk extract.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of corn silk extract;
  • 250 mL of water;

Directions

Boil the water with the corn silk extract, then remove from heat once it starts to bubble. Cover and let it infuse for 10 minutes. Once it has cooled slightly, strain and drink. You can consume this tea up to 3 times per day.

Corn silk can be purchased as a dietary supplement. Studies show that to achieve health benefits, you can consume 400 to 450 mg, two or three times per day. However, it is stronly recommended to speak to your doctor or a medicinal plant specialist before starting corn silk supplements to ensure you are taking the dose that is right for you. 

Contraindications for use

Studies show that corn silk is a medicinal plant that is safe for use. Although though it is associated with little to no side effects, it could be used with caution in patients with prostate inflammation, as it increases urinary frequency and can cause discomfort when urinating.

It should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women, as it alters the levels of oxytocin, which is a hormone that can promote uterine contractions. Patients who already take antihypertensives, anticoagulants, diuretics and antidiabetics should speak to their doctor before starting to use corn silk.
