Zomig is a prescription medication used to treat acute migraine attacks with or without aura in adults. It can help relieve migraine symptoms such as headache, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light.
Zomig contains zolmitriptan, a medication in a group of drugs known as triptans. In the United States, zolmitriptan is available by prescription as conventional tablets and orally disintegrating tablets.
Zomig should be used as directed by a neurologist or other healthcare professional. It is used to treat a migraine after symptoms begin and is not intended to prevent migraines.
What it is used for
Zomig is indicated for the treatment of acute migraine attacks with or without aura in adults.
This medication should be used as directed by a neurologist or other healthcare professional. It is not recommended for migraine prevention.
Zomig works by acting on serotonin receptors in blood vessels and sensory nerves involved in migraine, helping to relieve migraine symptoms.
How to take
Zomig is taken by mouth, although the way it is taken depends on the type of tablet:
-
Zomig film-coated tablet: swallow the tablet with water.
-
Zomig-ZMT orally disintegrating tablet: place the tablet on the tongue and allow it to dissolve, then swallow it with saliva. Water is not needed.
The medication should be taken according to the instructions provided by the prescribing healthcare professional.
Zomig dosage
The recommended starting dose of Zomig or zolmitriptan orally disintegrating tablets for adults is 1.25 mg or 2.5 mg.
If the headache does not improve or returns, another dose may be taken at least 2 hours after the first dose, as directed by a healthcare professional.
In some cases, particularly when a lower dose is not effective, a doctor may recommend a 5 mg dose.
The maximum recommended dose of Zomig is 10 mg within a 24-hour period.
Possible side effects
The most common side effects of Zomig include dizziness, tingling or other unusual sensations, drowsiness, a feeling of warmth, dry mouth, nausea, and weakness.
Other side effects may include palpitations, a faster heartbeat, abdominal discomfort or pain, muscle weakness or pain, or increased urination.
Some people may also experience difficulty swallowing or sensations of tightness, pressure, heaviness, or pain in the throat, neck, jaw, or chest.
Who should not use Zomig
Zomig should not be used by anyone who is allergic to zolmitriptan or any ingredient in the medication.
It is also contraindicated in people with ischemic coronary artery disease, coronary artery vasospasm, uncontrolled high blood pressure, peripheral vascular disease, ischemic bowel disease, or a history of stroke or transient ischemic attack. Certain heart conduction disorders and certain types of migraine are also contraindications.
Zomig should not be taken within the specified period after using another triptan or an ergot-containing medication, or while using certain monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) inhibitors.
The safety and effectiveness of zolmitriptan tablets and orally disintegrating tablets have not been established in children younger than 18. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should discuss the potential risks and benefits of treatment with their healthcare professional rather than treating pregnancy or breastfeeding as an absolute contraindication.
