Fleet enema is a laxative used to relieve constipation or to help cleanse the bowel. It contains dibasic sodium phosphate and monobasic sodium phosphate, which help draw water into the stool and increase stool volume, making it easier to pass.
It is used rectally, meaning it is applied directly into the rectum through the anus. It comes in a single-use bottle with a small applicator nozzle attached, and the bottle (and any leftover solution) should be thrown away after use.
Fleet enemas (sodium phosphate-based) and their generic equivalents are widely available over the counter in pharmacies and drugstores. They commonly come in 133 mL (4.5 fl oz) single-use bottles and are intended for adults and children 12 years and older, with a recommendation to consult a healthcare provider before use.
Indications for use
Fleet enema is indicated for:
-
Relief of constipation;
-
Bowel prep before or after surgery;
-
Bowel prep before childbirth;
-
Preparation for radiological or proctologic exams.
It works by holding water in the stool, which hydrates and softens it. This can trigger a bowel movement quickly, usually within 2 to 5 minutes after use.
How to use
Fleet enema should be used rectally with the applicator nozzle provided in the package. It does not need to be diluted or warmed before use.
To use a Fleet enema, follow these steps:
-
Clean the genital/anal area and empty your bladder before you begin;
-
Wash your hands with mild soap and water, then dry them with a clean, dry towel;
-
Wipe the Fleet enema bottle with 70% alcohol;
-
With the bottle upright, remove the protective cap from the applicator nozzle;
-
Lie on your left side and bend your knees;
-
Slowly insert the nozzle tip into the anus, aiming toward the navel;
-
Squeeze the bottle to release the liquid. You do not need to empty the bottle completely, since it contains more solution than is needed for one use;
-
Remove the nozzle and stay lying down for 2 to 5 minutes, until you feel the urge to have a bowel movement.
If you feel increased pressure or have trouble inserting the nozzle, remove the bottle. Forcing the liquid in may cause injury to the intestinal wall.
If you do not feel the urge to have a bowel movement within 5 minutes after using Fleet enema, do not repeat the dose. Contact the healthcare provider managing your treatment for guidance.
The usual recommended dose for adults and children over 12 years old is 1 rectal application as a single dose. According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), do not use more than 1 bottle within 24 hours.
Side effects
Because Fleet enema acts locally and is not absorbed in significant amounts, side effects are uncommon. Still, intense abdominal cramping can happen shortly before the bowel movement.
Other possible side effects include rectal bleeding, anal irritation, or signs of an allergic skin reaction near the rectal area, such as redness, itching, or swelling. If these symptoms occur, seek medical care right away.
Contraindications for use
Fleet enema should not be used by children under 12 years old. It also should not be used by people with suspected or confirmed appendicitis, ulcerative colitis, bowel obstruction or perforation, megacolon, liver or kidney failure, ascites, heart failure, high blood pressure, or allergy to any ingredient in the formula.
During pregnancy, Fleet enema may be used only if recommended and supervised by an OB/GYN or midwife.
