Why do I crave salt?

Salt cravings usually happen when the body is trying to correct a sodium imbalance. Most often, this occurs after fluid or salt loss from sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, or dehydration, which triggers hormones that increase the desire for salty foods. In these situations, craving salt is a normal response meant to help restore balance.

Hormones play a key role in this process. When sodium levels drop, the body activates systems that signal the brain to seek salt, increasing appetite for salty tastes. These same signals can also affect mood and energy levels, which may make cravings feel stronger or more urgent than simple hunger.

Salt cravings can also be linked to certain medical conditions. Adrenal insufficiency, including Addison’s disease, is a well-known cause and is often associated with low blood pressure, fatigue, and dizziness along with strong salt cravings. Hormonal changes during pregnancy or the premenstrual period may also increase preference for salty foods.

Occasional salt cravings are usually harmless, but persistent or intense cravings should not be ignored. Regularly adding large amounts of salt without guidance is not advised. If cravings are frequent or come with other symptoms, evaluation by a primary care doctor or endocrinologist is important to rule out underlying conditions.
