What causes sharp pain in my left breast that comes and goes?

A sharp pain in the left breast that comes and goes is often related to benign causes, especially when there is no lump, skin change, nipple discharge, fever, or injury. It may come from breast tissue, hormonal changes, a cyst, inflammation, or pain from the chest wall or muscles near the ribs.

Pain that is sharp, one-sided, or in a specific spot can sometimes be noncyclical breast pain, meaning it is not clearly linked to the menstrual cycle. Chest wall pain can also feel like breast pain and may be worse with certain movements, deep breaths, or pressing on the area. Breast pain by itself is rarely the only sign of breast cancer, but it still needs attention if it is new, focal, or persistent.

It may help to notice when the pain happens, how long it lasts, whether it relates to your period, exercise, stress, or certain movements, and whether the area feels tender when pressed. A supportive bra and avoiding activities that worsen the pain may help.

You should schedule an appointment with a primary care doctor, gynecologist, or breast specialist if the pain lasts more than a few weeks, keeps returning, or comes with any breast changes.
