Metronidazole is generally not recommended for treating urinary tract infections (UTIs), such as cystitis or pyelonephritis, because it is usually not effective against the microorganisms that cause these infections.
Metronidazole is indicated for the treatment of:
- Trichomoniasis;
- Bacterial vaginosis;
- Protozoal infections such as amebiasis;
- Infections caused by anaerobic bacteria.
This antibiotic can also cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and dizziness. In some cases, it may also cause changes in blood test results and should only be used under the guidance of a doctor.
