Is autism genetic?

“My cousin has a son with autism and I'm worried about having an autistic child too because a friend told me it is genetic. Is that true?”

Autism, also known as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is believed to have a genetic origin but can also be influenced by environmental factors. This means that, in addition to changes in DNA, other external factors may affect how genes function and could also contribute to the development of this condition.

Some environmental factors believed to be associated with autism include advanced parental age, low birth weight, and prenatal exposure to certain medications, such as thalidomide or valproic acid.

When planning a pregnancy, especially in cases where there may be concerns about potential risks for the baby, you are advised to consult an obstetrician and book a prenatal visit. The doctor can provide guidance and evaluate any possible risk factors that might influence your pregnancy or the baby’s development.
