Why does my ear hurt when I swallow?

“I've been having a little throat discomfort, and now I notice a sharp feeling in my ear whenever I drink water or eat. Should I be worried if my ear hurts when i swallow?”

Ear pain when swallowing often happens because the ear and throat share some of the same nerves. This means pain from the throat, tonsils, jaw, teeth, or nearby tissues can feel like it is coming from the ear.

Common causes include a throat infection, tonsillitis, peritonsillar abscess, dental problems, jaw joint irritation, or an ear infection. Swallowing can also change pressure around the middle ear, which may make existing ear pain feel worse.

It is more concerning if the pain is severe, only on one side, comes with fever, trouble swallowing, voice changes, neck swelling, weight loss, or does not improve. Sudden sharp, electric-like pain triggered by swallowing may need further evaluation.

Avoid self-medicating with antibiotics or ear drops unless they are prescribed, since the cause may not be inside the ear. A primary care doctor or ENT specialist can check the ear, throat, mouth, jaw, and neck to find the cause and recommend the right treatment.
