Cramps after sex can be normal for some women, especially when there isn’t enough vaginal lubrication or when penetration is very deep during intercourse. In these situations, the discomfort is usually mild and short-lived.
However, cramps after sex can also point to an underlying health problem. Possible causes include pelvic floor dysfunction, endometriosis, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), pelvic inflammatory disease, uterine scarring, or, more rarely, cervical cancer.
If you often experience cramps after sex, or if the cramps come with other symptoms, you should see a gynecologist or primary care provider to check for any underlying condition that might need treatment.
