Symptoms usually develop several days after the wound becomes contaminated. Signs of infection, such as fever, may also occur.
3. Intestinal botulism
Intestinal botulism occurs when toxin-producing bacteria colonize the intestines, multiply, and produce botulinum toxin, which is then absorbed by the body.
This type of botulism is rare in adults but may occur in people who have undergone intestinal surgery, have certain intestinal conditions, or have changes in their intestinal microbiota.
4. Infant botulism
Infant botulism occurs when C. botulinum spores colonize a baby's intestines and produce toxin.
Honey is a known source of C. botulinum spores and should not be given to babies younger than 1 year. At this age, the intestinal microbiota is still developing, making infants more susceptible to colonization by the bacteria.
5. Iatrogenic botulism
