Why do I keep waking up at 3AM?

Waking up around 3 a.m. is common and usually happens because the body is moving into a lighter stage of sleep. Around this time, natural changes in sleep-regulating hormones can make you more alert, especially if your sleep is already sensitive. When this pattern repeats, it often means something is disrupting your ability to stay asleep.

One reason is that the body starts preparing for morning earlier than most people expect. Stress-related hormones naturally begin to rise in the early morning hours, and if that rise is stronger than normal, it can wake you fully. Anxiety, ongoing stress, or breathing changes during sleep can also trigger brief awakenings that become harder to recover from.

Timing matters too. The second half of the night is when sleep is lighter, so alcohol in the evening, caffeine earlier in the day, pain, nighttime bathroom trips, or a warm or noisy bedroom are more likely to cause waking at the same hour each night. Some medical conditions and medications can also interfere with sleep maintenance.

If this keeps happening or leaves you tired during the day, avoid using sleep aids on your own. A primary care doctor or sleep specialist can help identify the cause and recommend the safest next steps.
