Why are my feet hot at night?

“I’ve noticed that when I get into bed, my feet feel unusually warm and sometimes uncomfortable, even though the room isn’t hot. I’m not sure if this is normal or something I should look into. Why are my feet hot at night?”

Feeling hot feet at night is usually related to how your body and nerves behave when you’re preparing for sleep. As bedtime approaches, blood flow naturally increases to the hands and feet to help release heat from the body, which can make your feet feel warm or hot. For some people, this sensation is stronger and uncomfortable.

In many cases, nerve sensitivity plays a role. Conditions that affect the nerves can cause burning or hot sensations that are more noticeable at night, when there are fewer distractions and the body is at rest. Warm bedding, higher room temperature, or lying still for long periods can also make these sensations feel more intense.

Timing matters. Symptoms often show up or worsen at night because blood flow to the feet increases and damaged or irritated nerves may misread normal temperature changes. Cooling the feet may bring short-term relief, but frequent or worsening symptoms are not considered normal and should not be ignored.

If hot feet at night happen often, disturb sleep, or come with pain, numbness, or color changes, it’s important to seek medical advice. A primary care doctor or neurologist can help identify the cause. Avoid self-medicating, and focus on getting a proper evaluation so the underlying issue can be addressed safely.
