When do boobs stop growing?

“I started getting boobs pretty early, and now I’m 16 and not sure if they’re still growing or if this is it. When do boobs stop growing?”

When boobs stop growing is usually around age 15, but for some girls breast development can continue until about age 18 or 19. This varies based on the age puberty started, along with genetic and hormonal factors.

Puberty typically begins between ages 8 and 13 in girls, and the start of breast development, called thelarche, is often the first sign. After breast development begins, it can take up to six years for the breasts to reach their final stage of development. Growth often happens gradually during this time.

Even after this stage, a woman’s body, including the breasts, can still change due to weight changes, hormonal shifts during the menstrual cycle, or pregnancy, for example. These factors may affect breast size and shape over time.

If you notice any changes or delays in your development, it’s best to see an adolescent medicine specialist, which is a pediatrician with advanced training in the care of teens. They can assess whether your development is on track and discuss treatment options if needed.
