When does your stomach start to get hard when you are pregnant?

“I’m about 14 weeks pregnant and my lower belly has started feeling firmer, but it comes and goes and I’m not sure what’s normal. When does your stomach start to get hard when you are pregnant?”

Your stomach may start to feel firmer during pregnancy as the uterus grows and rises out of the pelvis. This is often more noticeable from around 12 to 16 weeks, although some people may feel mild lower belly firmness earlier.

In the early weeks, the uterus is still low in the pelvis, so the belly may not feel very hard from the outside. As pregnancy progresses, the uterus expands, the abdominal muscles stretch, and the lower abdomen can start to feel fuller or tighter.

Some people also notice their belly suddenly gets hard for short periods. This can happen from Braxton Hicks contractions, which are “practice” contractions that usually start in the second trimester and may become more noticeable later in pregnancy.

Belly firmness can vary depending on body type, whether this is a first pregnancy, uterine position, and other factors. A hard belly alone is not a reliable way to estimate how far along a pregnancy is. Medical care should be sought urgently if tightening comes with bleeding, strong pain, fluid leaking, fever, or decreased fetal movement.
