Is it normal to experience nausea during your period?

“I’ve been getting nausea during my period almost every month. Is that normal or something I should be worried about?”

Nausea during your period is fairly common and usually results from hormonal changes. However, in some cases, nausea may also be linked to anxiety or gynecologic conditions such as endometriosis or primary dysmenorrhea.

In most cases, it is recommended to exercise regularly, avoid stress, get enough sleep while keeping consistent sleep hours, and avoid foods like processed meats or ultra-processed products, as well as coffee, soda, and alcoholic beverages.

In addition, depending on the cause of the nausea, a healthcare provider may also recommend talk therapy and medications, such as anti-inflammatory drugs, birth control, or antidepressants.

If you frequently experience nausea during your period and/or notice other symptoms, it’s best to see a gynecologist to identify the cause and begin the most appropriate treatment.
