Is ibuprofen an anti-inflammatory?

“I’ve had a really sore throat and some body aches and was thinking of taking ibuprofen. Is ibuprofen an anti-inflammatory?”

Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory. Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that may be recommended to help relieve symptoms such as fever or pain associated with conditions like pharyngitis (sore throat), the common cold, flu, or migraine. However, it should always be used with guidance from a healthcare professional.

This medication usually does not address the underlying cause of the problem, which in some cases may be a bacterial infection. When that happens, the most effective treatment generally involves the use of antibiotics, for example.

If your throat is red and painful, it’s best to see your primary care provider or an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can determine the cause and recommend the most appropriate treatment before you use any medication on your own.
