Chamomile tea is safe during pregnancy when consumed occasionally. However, it’s important to choose products from reputable sources to ensure the tea is pure and not contaminated with other herbs that could pose risks during pregnancy.
Drinking tea every day or very often is not recommended. Consuming large amounts of tea compounds can lead to toxicity. In addition, frequent use of bagged teas may raise fluoride levels in the pregnant person’s blood, and too much fluoride could impact fetal brain development.
Chamomile tea has anti-inflammatory properties and a moderate antioxidant and antimicrobial effect. It is mainly recommended to help relieve cramps and diarrhea. The calming effect that chamomile is popularly known for is not proven.
Whenever there is any doubt about which tea or food is safe during pregnancy, it is best to consult your OB/GYN or midwife.
