Inguinal hernia surgery recovery time is usually short. Most patients stay in the hospital for 12 to 24 hours and can return to work and resume normal activities within 1 to 2 weeks, as long as they do not need to lift heavy weight.
There are no diet restrictions after surgery. However, in the first few days, it is normal to have some nausea or even vomiting because of the medications and anesthesia used during the procedure. These symptoms usually go away within 1 to 2 days, after the body clears the medications received in the hospital. If nausea and vomiting continue after this period, it is important to see a doctor.
The incisions are then closed with stitches, and it is normal to have some pain and even bruising in the area afterward. However, if the incision shows signs of infection, such as redness, severe pain, swelling, warmth, or pus with a strong odor, you should contact a doctor.
During recovery for inguinal hernia surgery, it is important to avoid staying in bed or sitting for too long. Walking several times a day is recommended, but without lifting weight. Heavy lifting should be avoided for about 3 months after surgery.
