Dry eye happens when the tear film loses its balance. This can be due to low tear production, poor tear quality, inflammation, or problems with the oil glands in the eyelids. Because these underlying causes often continue, treatment focuses on long-term management rather than a one-time fix.
Most people need a stepwise approach. This may include artificial tears, warm compresses, eyelid hygiene, prescription anti-inflammatory drops, or procedures such as punctal plugs or treatments for blocked oil glands. In more severe cases, advanced therapies may be needed. Even when symptoms improve, maintenance treatment is often necessary.
If symptoms are ongoing or worsening, an evaluation by an ophthalmologist is important to identify the specific type of dry eye and guide treatment. Avoid self-medicating with frequent or long-term use of steroid eye drops without medical supervision.
