How many teeth do humans have?

“A friend told me she had 2 wisdom teeth removed and that she now has 29 teeth. I thought that was weird, because I counted the teeth I have, and I only have 28. How many teeth do humans usually have?”

Humans typically have 20 baby teeth and 32 permanent teeth over the course of a lifetime. Baby teeth, also known as primary or deciduous teeth, are the first to emerge and are gradually replaced by permanent teeth.

The first permanent teeth usually begin to appear around age 6. By age 13, most people have all their permanent teeth, except for the third molars, or wisdom teeth. These generally come in between the ages of 17 and 25. Learn more about wisdom teeth and when they tend to erupt.

If there are any signs of delayed or irregular tooth eruption, it is recommended to see a dentist for an evaluation and to determine the most appropriate treatment.
