Does prednisone make you sleepy?

“I’ve been taking prednisone for a few days and noticed I feel really tired during the day, even though I’m also having trouble sleeping at night. Does prednisone make you sleepy”

Prednisone does not usually make people feel sleepy. In most cases, it has the opposite effect and can cause restlessness, trouble sleeping, or a feeling of being more alert than usual. Because of this, true drowsiness is not considered a common direct effect of this medication.

That said, some people may feel tired during the day while taking prednisone. This often happens indirectly, when nighttime sleep is disrupted and the body does not get enough rest. Fatigue can also appear during dose reductions or after stopping prednisone, when the body is adjusting and natural hormone levels are temporarily low. In these situations, tiredness may feel significant even though the medication itself is not sedating.

The timing and dose of prednisone matter. Higher doses are more likely to interfere with normal sleep patterns, especially if taken later in the day. Long-term use can also affect energy levels, mood, and sleep quality, which may contribute to feeling worn out over time.

Prednisone should only be used as prescribed, and doses should never be changed suddenly. If ongoing fatigue, sleep problems, or weakness occur, a doctor should evaluate the situation and guide any adjustments safely. An endocrinologist or the prescribing physician may be involved in follow-up care.
