Does diarrhea cause weight loss?

“I’ve had diarrhea on and off for the past few days, and I’ve noticed the number on the scale dropping. Does diarrhea cause weight loss?”

Diarrhea can cause weight loss. When diarrhea starts suddenly, the weight loss is mainly from losing water, which can lead to dehydration.

When diarrhea is persistent, it doesn’t just lead to fluid loss; it can also interfere with your body’s ability to absorb nutrients. Over time, this poor absorption can lead to weight loss and other health problems. For this reason, diarrhea is not a safe or healthy way to lose weight.

Possible causes of diarrhea include viral, bacterial, or parasitic infections, as well as food poisoning, which can trigger acute diarrhea. Some medications, such as laxatives, magnesium-containing antacids, or antibiotics, can also cause diarrhea that may be acute or chronic, depending on how they are used.

Intestinal and endocrine problems can lead to chronic/chronic-diarrhea/ diarrhea. Malabsorption syndromes, such as celiac disease, pancreatic insufficiency, and carbohydrate intolerance (like lactose intolerance), can cause frequent diarrhea. Some foods can make diarrhea worse, including those with caffeine (coffee, teas, and soft drinks) and products with mannitol or xylitol (found in some medications, gum, and candy). Eating too much fruit can also increase diarrhea.

If diarrhea is very intense, frequent, or comes with cramps or fever, it’s important to see your primary care provider or a gastroenterologist (GI doctor) to identify the cause and start the most appropriate treatment.

The most effective and safest way to lose weight is through a balanced diet and regular physical activity. For personalized guidance, consider consulting a registered dietitian and a qualified fitness professional.
