Can you drink energy drinks while pregnant?

“I’m in my first trimester and I’ve been feeling really tired. Can you drink energy drinks while pregnant?”

You should not drink energy drinks while pregnant. Their ingredients can vary widely, and it’s often unclear how much of each substance you’re consuming in a single serving.

Most energy drinks contain caffeine, taurine, added vitamins, flavorings, and artificial colors. Some of these ingredients are not considered safe during pregnancy. Excess caffeine intake in pregnancy is linked to a higher risk of complications such as miscarriage, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), and low birth weight.

In addition, energy drinks may contain sugar. Consuming a high amount of sugar can lead to excessive weight gain during pregnancy and gestational diabetes. It can also cause changes in the baby’s taste preferences and metabolism, which may increase the risk of obesity.

If you have questions about what you can eat or drink during pregnancy, talk with your OB/GYN or midwife or consult a registered dietitian for more detailed, personalized guidance.
