Bleeding after Pap smear testing is usually normal. It is typically light and may last for 1 to 2 days. This can happen because the cervix is sensitive and may bleed slightly when cells are collected during the test.
In some cases, bleeding after a Pap smear may be more likely due to inflammation of the cervix, also known as cervicitis, cervical ectropion, vaginal dryness or thinning after menopause, or a cervical polyp.
See an OB-GYN if the bleeding is heavy, lasts longer than 2 days, or occurs along with pelvic pain, unusual discharge, a bad odor, fever, bleeding between periods, or bleeding during or after sex. These symptoms may require an examination to determine the cause.
