Can I take azithromycin for a UTI?

“I have some leftover azithromycin from a throat infection and think I might have a UTI. Can I take azithromycin for a UTI?”

Azithromycin for a UTI is not a recommended treatment.

Although it’s an antibiotic, azithromycin is usually prescribed for other bacterial infections, such as those affecting the upper respiratory tract (like sinusitis or sore throat), the lower respiratory tract (like pneumonia), or the skin and soft tissues.

It's important to take antibiotics only as prescribed and never for a different illness or condition. If you think you might have a UTI, make sure to see your primary care provider or a urologist. They can determine the most suitable antibiotic for your specific infection based on the bacteria causing it.
