What is a normal 5 month old wake window?

“I’ve been trying to figure out my baby’s sleep schedule, but sometimes he seems tired sooner or stays awake longer than I expect. Is there a normal 5 month old wake window I should be following?”

A 5-month-old typically stays awake for about 2 to 3 hours between sleep periods. This is not a strict rule, but a general range that fits most infants at this age as their sleep becomes more organized.

At this stage, babies usually need around 12 to 15 hours of total sleep in 24 hours. As nighttime sleep becomes longer and more consolidated, daytime naps are spaced out more, which naturally increases awake time between them. Most babies will take a few naps during the day, with wake periods gradually lengthening compared to earlier months.

There is a lot of normal variation. Some babies may stay awake a bit longer or shorter depending on their sleep needs and development. What matters most is the overall balance between sleep and awake time, since too much daytime sleep or very short wake periods may not be ideal for development.

Watch for your baby’s cues, like rubbing eyes or becoming fussy, rather than following a rigid schedule. If sleep patterns seem very irregular or difficult, it is a good idea to discuss this with a pediatrician before making changes on your own.
