If your vagina is itchy, it may be caused by several different conditions. Common causes include allergies, often triggered by contact with synthetic fabrics or irritating products, or skin conditions like atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, or lichen planus. Vaginal itching can also be a sign of infections, such as genital herpes, HPV, or yeast infections, as well as skin parasites like lice or scabies, or even a pinworm infection (enterobiasis).
In women going through menopause, itching and burning in the vagina can also be related to atrophic vaginitis, a condition caused by a decrease in estrogen levels.
To relieve itching and burning, it’s important to treat the underlying cause. For this reason, a medical evaluation is recommended. For example, if the cause is scabies, an antiparasitic medication may be prescribed, while for genital herpes, an antiviral may be indicated.
