Can you mix losartan and alcohol?

“I've been taking losartan for my blood pressure, and I'm wondering if it's safe to have a couple of beers with friends. Can you mix losartan and alcohol?”

Losartan and alcohol are not usually strictly prohibited together. However, alcohol can increase losartan’s blood pressure-lowering effect, especially during the first few days of treatment or after a dose increase.

This combination may cause blood pressure to drop too low. Low blood pressure symptoms can include dizziness, lightheadedness, a fast heartbeat, weakness, or fainting.

Adults who drink alcohol should generally limit intake to no more than two drinks in a day for men or one drink in a day for women. One standard drink is approximately 12 fl oz of regular beer containing 5% alcohol.
