Can I drink alcohol if I am taking fluconazole?

“I'm taking fluconazole for a yeast infection and was wondering if it's okay to drink alcohol while using it. I've read mixed things online and don’t want to risk any side effects. Is it safe to have a drink or should I wait until I finish the treatment?”

It’s generally safe to drink alcohol while taking fluconazole, as there are no known contraindications between the two. However, alcohol should always be consumed in moderation. Drinking enough to cause intoxication or a hangover can increase the risk of liver problems or fluconazole toxicity.

Fluconazole can make existing liver conditions worse, so it’s important to tell a healthcare provider if you have liver disease before starting treatment. Because alcohol also affects the liver, people with liver issues should avoid drinking during fluconazole treatment.

If you prefer to avoid any possible interaction between fluconazole and alcohol, wait at least 48 hours between taking the medication and consuming alcohol. This time frame is considered safe to minimize potential risks.

Consult your primary care provider or a pharmacist if you have liver problems or are unsure about drinking while taking fluconazole.
