An enlarged uterus can be caused by several conditions, including pregnancy, recent childbirth, hormonal birth control, uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, gestational trophoblastic disease, or cancer.
If an enlarged uterus is detected on an exam or imaging test, it is important to see a doctor, preferably the one who ordered the test. The imaging results should be reviewed carefully, as they may show other findings as well.
Medical evaluation is especially important if you have symptoms such as abnormal uterine bleeding, a missed period, nausea or vomiting, abdominal discomfort, weight loss, or severe menstrual cramps.
