Can you take amoxicillin while breastfeeding?

“My doctor prescribed amoxicillin for a sinus infection, but I forgot to mention that I am breastfeeding. Can you take amoxicillin while breastfeeding?”

Breastfeeding women can take amoxicillin if it is prescribed by a doctor. Only a small amount of amoxicillin passes into breast milk, and it is generally not considered unsafe during breastfeeding.

Some studies have found that babies breastfed by mothers taking amoxicillin may occasionally develop mild symptoms, such as skin redness or diarrhea. However, serious problems are not expected.

As with any medication, antibiotics should only be used under medical guidance and exactly as prescribed.
