Most breastfeeding women can take ibuprofen, as long as there are no medical conditions that prevent its use and it is taken under a doctor’s guidance. When used in the recommended doses, ibuprofen taken by the mother does not appear to cause harm to the baby during breastfeeding.
Main contraindications of ibuprofen use
-
History of allergy to ibuprofen, aspirin (ASA), or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
-
Peptic ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding
-
Pregnancy, except when prescribed by a doctor
-
Severe heart, kidney, or liver failure
-
Dengue infection, as it may increase the risk of bleeding
Before taking any medication while breastfeeding, including ibuprofen, it is important to consult a doctor to reduce possible risks to the baby’s health.
