What to do to improve breast milk production

To improve breast milk production, it is important for women who breastfeed to drink about 3 to 4 liters of fluids a day, have a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and also increase the frequency and duration of breastfeeding, to stimulate the hormone prolactin that increases the production of breast milk.

The more the baby breastfeeds, the more milk the mother produces, so the mother should let the baby breastfeed whenever they are hungry, even at night and, if possible, let the baby empty the breast until the end and then offer the baby the other one.

It is important to maintain breastfeeding even in case of mastitis or injured nipple, because by sucking the baby also helps to treat these situations.

The following tips should be followed daily to ensure considerable milk production:

1. Drink water

It is important to drink 3 to 4 liters of liquids a day, such as water, juices and soups to ensure good milk production. Always drink 1 cup of water, tea or juice before and after breastfeeding.

2. Look at the baby

Looking at the baby as they suckles can help to release more hormones into the bloodstream and consequently increase milk production.

3. Follow a good diet

Your diet during the breastfeeding phase should be balanced and rich in foods with water such as gelatin and fruits such as orange, cantaloupe and watermelon as well as foods that provide plenty of energy such as hominy, chestnut and cod.

4. Relax

Resting whenever possible ensures that the body has energy for milk production. You can enjoy sitting in your breastfeeding chair when the baby has finished breastfeeding and, if possible, should avoid household chores, especially those that require more effort.

5. Take Supplements

Taking a specially formulated breastfeeding supplement like Milky Mama can help produce more milk. Before starting the supplement, you should talk to your GP or pediatrician about this possibility. In addition, mint tea can also help produce more milk.

Women may know that she is producing enough milk for the baby if the baby is increasing weight properly. If in consultations with the pediatrician, the doctor feels that the baby is not gaining enough weight, he or she may be able to advise you to use the bottle with adapted milk to complete breastfeeding or as a replacement.

The baby should be exclusively breastfed until 6 months and although the mother may have to go back to work before this recommendation, the baby may continue to drink the mother's milk from the bottle if the mother removes the milk at home and at work and gives it to those who stay taking care of the baby.
