How to control a fever with medication

Paracetamol is the most indicated medicine to reduce fever, because it is a substance that can be used in almost all cases, even in children or pregnant women, and the dose should be adjusted especially for children, up to 30 kg. Paracetamol can be found in different medication under the trade names Tylenol, Panadol, Aceta or Dapacin, for example.

However, this active substance may be associated with others, such as caffeine, vitamin C, codeine or antihistamines, which can be found in medicines such as Tylenol with codeine or Excedrin Mild Headache and will potentiate the action of paracetamol, increase the effectiveness of pain management, or improve other symptoms characteristic of colds and flu, such as sneezing, runny nose, allergic cough and weakened immune system.

Other examples of fever remedies are Dipyrone, ibuprofen or aspirin, but they have more side effects and should therefore only be used with the recommendation of the physician. However, ibuprofen and aspirin are also anti-inflammatory drugs, which can help in symptoms such as a sore throat, for example.

The dosage of these medicines should be determined by the doctor and the dose depends on the age and weight of the person.

How to prepare a home remedy to break a fever

A great home remedy for fever is to take warm ginger, spearmint and elderberry tea, about 3 to 4 times a day as it increases perspiration, which decreases fever.

  • To make the tea: Simply mix 2 teaspoons of ginger, 1 teaspoon of mint leaves and 1 teaspoon of dried elderberry in 250 ml of boiling water, strain and then drink.

Another very effective home remedy is to put a wet sponge or towel in cold water on the face, chest or wrists, replacing them whenever they are no longer cold.
