The most suitable medication to reduce fever is acetaminophen, as it is a substance that, when used correctly, can be safely used in almost all cases, even in children or pregnant women, and the dose should be adapted, especially in children up to 30 Kg (about 66 lbs).
Other examples of fever medication are Dipyrone, ibuprofen or aspirin, but these drugs have more contraindications and side effects than acetaminophen and should therefore only be used with the doctor's advice.
The dosage of these medications should be determined by the doctor, taking into account their age, weight and symptoms of each person.
Medication to lower a baby's fever
The most suitable drugs to reduce fever in the baby are acetaminophen (Tylenol), infant Dipyrone (Novalgina) and ibuprofen (Alivium, Doraliv), which should be given by age-adapted pharmaceutical forms such as oral suspension, oral drops or suppositories, for example. These medications can also help in pain relief.
These medications should only be taken preferably from 3 months of age, every 6 or 8 hours, depending on the pediatrician's indication and according to the child's body weight. In some cases, your doctor may suggest taking two medications every 4 hours, such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen, for example, to reduce fever symptoms.
To help lower your baby's fever you can also remove excess clothing, offer cool drinks or wet your child's face and neck with damp towels. See more tips on what to do to lower a baby's fever.
Medication to lower a fever in pregnant women
Although acetaminophen (Tylenol) is considered safe for use by pregnant women, it should be avoided as much as other medication without medical advice. It is also important to note that many paracetamol medication in their composition have other substances that are not indicated in pregnancy.
How to prepare a home remedy for a fever
A great home remedy for fever is to take a warm tea of ginger, mint and elderflower about 3 to 4 times a day as it increases sweating, which can help to reduce fever.
To make this tea, simply mix 2 teaspoons of ginger, 1 teaspoon of mint leaves and 1 teaspoon of dry elderberry flower in 250 mL of boiling water, strain and drink.
Another natural measure that can help lower your fever is to place a towel or sponge soaked in cold water over your face, chest or wrists, replacing them whenever they are no longer cold.
