Some teas (like ginger tea, peppermint tea or fennel tea) can help relieve nausea or vomiting caused by indigestion, stomach pain, gastritis, ulcers or even pregnancy. These teas contain substances with properties that reduce vomiting, decrease stomach contractions and soothe the intestinal tract. 

Many of these teas can help relieve anxiety, nervousness, or stress, which are factor that contribute to or worsen nausea. 

Although these teas do not replace medical treatment, they are a good option to relieve nausea and vomiting, and can be used to complement any treatment prescribed by the doctor.

The main teas that help to combat nausea are:

1. Ginger tea

Ginger tea is rich in phenolic compounds like gingerol and cogaol, which are have natural antiemetic action. 

This tea can be used to treat heartburn, indigestion, pregnancy and even relieve nausea and vomiting related to chemotherapy or radiation therapy. 

Ingredients

  • 1 cm of ginger root, chopper or grated
  • 1 liter (4 cups) or boiling water 

How to prepare

Boil the water and add the ginger. Allow to boil for an additional 5 to 10 minutes. Remove the ginger and drink the tea. You can divide the amount in 3 to 4 servings to take throughout the day, 20 minutes before meals. 

You can also substitute the ginger root for 1 teaspoon of ginger water, which should be diluted in the boiling water. 

Ginger tea should be avoided by people using anticoagulants like warfarin or acetylsalicylic acid. It an increase your risk for bleeding or hemorrhaging. Pregnant women should not use more than 1 ginger per day and should not take this tea for more than 3 consecutive days.

This tea should not be taken close to the due date or by women with a history of miscarriages, clotting problems or with increased risk for bleeding. 

2. Peppermint tea

Peppermint tea, prepared with the medicinal plant Mentha piperita, is rich in volatile oils like menthol and menthone. These contain anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, soothing and analgesic properties that help to relieve nausea or vomiting caused by stomach pain, indigestion or a gastric ulcer. 

Ingredients

  • 2 to 3 spoons of fresh, dry or ground peppermint leaves 
  • 150 mL (5 oz) of boiling water 

How to prepare

Place the peppermint leaves in a teacup and cover with the water. Allow it to soak for 5 to 10 minutes then strain. This tea should be taken 3 to 4 times per day.

Peppermint tea should be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It is also not indicated for cases of GERD, as it can increase gastric sensibility. 

3. Fennel tea

Fennel tea contains anethole, estragole, and camphor, which are substances with antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and digestive actions. They help to relieve stomach inflammation, reduce any burning sensation and increase gastric emptying, which makes this tea an excellent home remedy for treating nausea or vomiting. It is especially beneficial for cases of indigestion or reflux. 

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of fennel seeds 
  • 1 cup of hot water 

How to prepare

Add the fennel seeds to a cup of hot water. Cover and allow to cool for 10 to 15 minutes. Then strain and drink 2 to 3 cups of this tea throughout the day, 20 minutes before a meal. Another option is to use fennel teabags.

Fennel tea should not be taken by pregnant or breastfeeding women. 

4. Chamomile tea 

Chamomile tea is rich in phenolic compounds like apigenin, quercetin and patuletin. It contains anti-inflammatory and soothing properties that work on the gastrointestinal tract to relieve issues like indigestion, cramping, gastritis or ulcers.

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons of dry chamomile flowers
  • 250 mL (1 cup) of boiling water

How to prepare

Add the dry flowers to a teacup with boiling water, cover, and allow to rest for 5 to 10 minutes. Then strain and drink.

This tea can be taken 3 times per day. You can also sweeten it with a teaspoon of honey. 

Another way of preparing chamomile tea is using teabags which can be purchased at supermarkets or pharmacies. 

5. Licorice tea

Licorice contains glycyrrhizin, which is a substance that reduces stomach acid and protects the stomach lining. This can be useful to relieve nausea or vomiting caused by heartburn, gastric ulcers, stomach pain or indigestion.  

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon of licorice root  
  • 1 teacup of boiling water  
  • Honey to sweeten as needed

How to prepare

Add the licorice the teacup with boiling water, cover and allow to soak for 10 minutes. Strain and sweeten with honey if desired. Drink this tea up to twice per day. 

Licorice tea should not be taken by pregnant or breastfeeding women, or by people with high blood pressure, cardiac problems or kidney disease.   

6. Boldo tea

Boldo prepared with fresh leaves is rich in boldine and rosmarinic acid, which are substances with digestive, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic and astringent properties. They can help reduce stomach acid and help with fat digestion., which can be especially useful for nausea caused by heartburn, gastritis, a hangover or food intolerance.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon of chopped boldo leaves 
  • 150 mL (5 oz) of boiling water 

How to prepare

Add the boldo teas to the hot water. Allow to soak for 5 to 10 minutes, strain and drink while still warm. You can drink this 2 to 3 times per day, before or after meals. Another option is to drink one cup before going to bed to help with dinner digestion. 

Boldo tea can cause side-effects, especially when consumed for more than 20 days. It is contraindicated for pregnant women and for people with a history or acute hepatitis, gallbladder stones, biliary duct inflammation or pancreatitis. 

7. Lemon

Lemon tea contains limonene, which helps to relieve nausea caused by anxiety, indigestion or constipation. It also contains soothing properties for the stomach and intestinal stimulates. 

Ingredients

  • Half a cup of water 
  • 3 cm of lemon peel 

How to prepare

Boil the water and then add the lemon peels. Cover for 3 to 5 minutes and drink right after, while warm, without sweetening. 

8. Cumin tea

Cumin tea is rich in luteolin and apigenin and contains antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory action, which help relieve nausea, cramping and gases. It is especially beneficial for relieving symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. 

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of cumin leaves or 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds 
  • 200 mL (3 oz) of boiling water

How to prepare

Add the cumin to the boiling water, cover and allow to soak for 10 minutes. Strain and rink up for 2 to 3 cups of this tea per day. 

9. Clove tea

Clove tea can help to reduce stomach pain and inflammation. This tea possesses eugenol, which is a substance with anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. This tea is a great option to relieve nausea and vomiting related to stomach pain. This tea can also be used to relieve a sore throat. 

Ingredients

  • 10 units of clove  
  • 1 cup of tea 

How to prepare

Place the cloves in the boiling water for 5 minutes and cover. Allow to cool, strain and drink twice per day. 

10. Lavender tea

Lavender tea is a good option to relieve nausea or vomiting, especially when caused by anxiety and labyrinthitis. It contains substances with calming and relaxing actions. 

Ingredients

  • ½ a teaspoon of lavender flowers 
  • 1 cup of boiling water

How to prepare

Add the lavender flowers to the boiling water and allow to soak for 10 minutes. Then strain and drink one cup of this day per day, before bed. 

Lavender tea should not be taken by pregnant women or people with a history of stomach ulcers or lavender allergies. 

11. Anise tea 

Anise tea is rich in phenolic compounds with antioxidant and digestive action. It helps to relieve nausea caused by indigestion, especially after heavy and fatty meals.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of anise flowers 
  • 500 mL (2 cups) of boiling water 
  • Honey to sweeten (optional) 

How to prepare

Pour the boiling water in a teacup and add the anise flowers. Cover, allower to fool, strain and sweeten with honey. You can take this tea 3 times per day until your symptoms improve.
