How to get Pregnant with Twins

Twins occur in the same family due to genetic predisposition but there are some external factors that may contribute to a twin pregnancy, such as taking medication that stimulates ovulation or through in-vitro fertilization.

When the man has a twin brother, this does not mean that his wife will have twins, because the genetic factor is totally dependent on the woman.

How to get Pregnant with Twins

What is the probability of conceiving twins

Not every woman can get pregnant with twins naturally, because the main factor in this happening is that she herself is a twin, whether she is a twin to a brother or sister. In this case, the woman will mature 2 eggs at one time, and will give way to twin children, but that are not identical.

The chances of having identical twins are the same for all women, because in this case, initially there was only one egg that was fertilized by the sperm, but in the first few hours of conception, it split into 2, giving rise to two identical babies, not being influenced by genetics, occurring by chance.

Medication that can help you conceive twins

Remedies, like Clomiphene, are not only prescribed for the woman who want to conceive twins. It is also a medication prescribed to stimulate ovulation during a fertility treatment, which lasts for many months, and should always be directed by specialists in human reproduction.

Tips for conceiving twins

There are a few tips that can help increase the chances of having twin babies, but different, such as:

  • Getting pregnant before the age of 35, between the ages of 18 and 30, the eggs are healthier, with better conditions to maintain a healthy gestation until the end;
  • Getting pregnant near menopause, in the 40's and 50's, because at this stage their is an increase in estrogen which can cause the body to release more than one egg at a time;
  • Get treatment for pregnancy, with medications or IVF;
  • Try to get pregnant as soon as you stop taking the contraceptive pill because in the first 3 cycles the body is still adjusting and there is more chance of releasing more than one egg;
  • Eat more yams and sweet potatoes because this may helps you to ovulate more and better.

Facts not proven by scientifically

Taking folic acid does not guarantee the pregnancy of twins because this is a dietary supplement indicated for all women who are trying to conceive or who are already pregnant to protect the baby's nervous system.

Eating more dairy products such as milk, yogurt, butter and cheese are good sources of calcium but there is no scientific proof that it can stimulate ovulation;

Sexual positions also do not interfere with the ability to conceive twins because the most important thing is for the woman to have 2 eggs at the same time in the tubes and this can not be achieved during sexual contact, because even if more sperm arrive that will not guarantee a twin pregnancy.

How is a pregnancy with twins

Twin pregnancy is considered a risky pregnancy because there is a greater risk of premature birth and eclampsia, which is a condition where blood pressure rises in a dangerous way.

Because of this, the expectant mother of twins should follow some special cautions during pregnancy such as attending all prenatal appointments and having a balanced diet. Sometimes the obstetrician indicates rest at around 30 weeks of gestation so that the babies can grow and gain enough weight to be born healthy.

Difference between monochorionic-monoamniotic and dichorionic-diamniotic twins

MoMo Twins

DCDA twins
DCDA twins

There are two types of twins, the ones that are monochorionic-monoamniotic (MoMo twins), and dichorionic-diamniotic (DCDA) twins.

In a monochorionic-monoamniotic pregnancy the twins babies share the same genetic information, possessing only slight differences from one another, such as fingerprints, for example. In this case, the egg was fertilized by only one spermatozoon and the egg formed divided in two, giving way to 2 identical babies.

But in the pregnancy of dichorionic-diamniotic twins, babies are different and can be a boy and a girl. In this case, 2 ovules were fertilized and fertilized by 2 different spermatozoa.

So, the twins can be:

  • Monochorionic-monoamniotic: They share the same placenta and are identical;
  • Dichorionic-diamniotic: Each one has its own placenta and they are different.

Although it is uncommon, it is possible for the woman to have a new ovulation after a few days of fertilization, becoming pregnant with twins with days or weeks of difference between them. In this case the twins will be Dichorionic-diamniotic.
