Home remedy for gastroesophageal reflux

Home remedies for gastroesophageal reflux are a very practical and simple way to relieve discomfort during crisis. However, these remedies should not replace your doctor's advice, and it is best to use them to supplement your treatment.

Reflux occurs when the acidic fluid in the stomach goes up into the esophagus and into the mouth, causing pain and a burning sensation especially after meals. Here's how to fight reflux naturally:

1. Water with lemon

Lemon water is an ancient natural remedy widely used to relieve heartburn and reflux discomfort, because in some people it has the power to alkalinize gastric acid and function as a natural antacid.

However, several studies have also identified that lemon water may worsen symptoms in some people. So, ideally, try lemon water and, if symptoms get worse, you can go for other  options.

To make this natural remedy, you should add one tablespoon of lemon juice to a glass of warm water. This mixture can be drunk up to 30 minutes before meals.

2. Ginger tea

Ginger has many properties, and is also very effective in improving digestion because it can stimulate the digestive system in producing more enzymes and decreases the time food stays in the stomach, preventing reflux. See more of the benefits ginger can have on your health.

Due to its content in phenolic compounds, ginger can also be excellent for relieving gastric irritation, reducing the chances of gastric acid rising into the esophagus. However, further studies are needed to prove this effect.

To enjoy its benefits, you can add 4 to 5 slices or 2 tablespoons of ginger zest in a liter of ice water and drink throughout the day, for example.

3. Sodium bicarbonate

Baking soda is a natural alkalizing salt that can be used to lower stomach acidity in times of crisis. In fact, baking soda is even used in some antacid drugs sold at the drugstore, making it a great home-made option.

To use baking soda, mix 1 teaspoon of the powder in 250 ml of water and drink at least half of the mixture to achieve the desired effect.

4. Chamomile tea

Chamomile is a natural tranquilizer that can help in treating problems in the stomach, controlling poor digestion and treating ulcers in the stomach. To help treat reflux, it is recommended you drink 2 to 3 cups of tea a day. In addition, chamomile can also help to relieve anxiety and stress, which are a major cause of reflux onset. Aleo vera can also help to treat pain and the burning sensation caused by reflux, and may be useful in the treatment of gastritis.

To prepare this juice just open two leaves of aleo vera and remove all of its pulp, peel an apple and remove its seeds and add water. Put all these ingredients in a blender and beat well, sweetening to taste.

Simple tips for treating reflux

Other important tips for treating reflux include:

  • Avoid drinking liquids during meals;
  • Avoid lying down within 30 minutes after meals;
  • Chew and eat slowly;
  • Wear loose clothing that does not tighten at the waist;
  • Eat small meals, especially at dinner;
  • Eat at least 2 hours before bedtime;
  • Avoid liquid meals at dinner, such as soups or broths;
  • Lying on the bed on your left side may help to prevent the contents of the stomach from reaching the esophagus and, consequently, the mouth.

Another tip that works very well is to place a piece of wood at least 10 inches under the foot of the bed, on the headboard side. This wedge will cause the body to be slightly tilted, preventing the acid from the stomach from rising into the esophagus, causing reflux. If treatment with medication or natural remedies does not improve the symptoms, surgery may be necessary to cure reflux.
