Home Remedies for Head Lice

Some good strategies to eliminate lice and nits are to wash your hair with strong rue tea or use the citronella spray, camphorated alcohol or even essential oils.

These home remedies are great to use on children because they are non-toxic and in addition to fighting the infestation, helps to prevent it, even if a brother or school friend has lice.

Home Remedies for Head Lice

1. Wash your hair with Rue tea

An excellent home remedy for treating lice and lice infestations is to wash your hair with rue tea as it eliminates lice and soothes the itchy scalp.

You can apply the tea to wet hair before passing the thin comb so as to eliminate naturally the lice and their eggs.

  • 40 g of rue leaves
  • 1 liter of boiling water

Preparation Method

Put the rue leaves in the boiling water and let infuse for 10 minutes. Cover, let it cool and then strain. Once the tea is ready you should apply this infusion to the hair with the aid of a piece of cotton or gauze or simply throwing the mixture on, ensuring that all your hair gets wet.

Next you should wrap a towel on the head and let the rue infusion act for 30 minutes. Then wash your hair with shampoo, apply conditioner and do not rinse, passing a thin comb on each strand of hair to remove dead lice and nits.

2. Use citronella spray

Citronella fights insects, including lice because it has a very intense aroma, which they do not like.

  • 150 ml of liquid glicerin
  • 150 ml of citronella tincture
  • 350 ml of alcohol
  • 350 ml of water

Preparation Method

Mix all ingredients and place in a tightly closed container. Apply daily on the hair and its root, letting it act for a few minutes.

3. Applying oils to the scalp

Simply apply a mixture of the following oils in equal proportions: lavender oil, peppermint oil and eucalyptus oil throughout the scalp and leave to act all night and then wash the hair in the morning with a shampoo for oily hair.

4. Spray camphorated alcohol

Camphorated alcohol can be found in pharmacies, but you can also only buy camphor in small pieces and then add it to the alcohol bottle and leave the product inside. Just sprinkle a little of this alcohol all over the hair to prevent infestation of lice.

Tips for eliminating lice

Another important tip to stop the lice is to wash the individual's clothes, bed sheets, pillowcase and bath towel separately and then put in a pan of boiling water for a few minutes.

Each louse lives about 30 days, and puts an average of 6 to 8 eggs per day, which within 7 days hatch, giving rise to lice, and so when someone is with lice you must be very careful that others do not get contaminated, avoid lending hats or clothes that may contain lice or nits.

These treatments should be followed daily until all the lice and nits are eliminated.
