Lip herpes: How to treat cold sores faster

To cure mouth herpes faster, reducing the pain, discomfort and risk of contaminating other people, you can apply an anti-viral ointment every 2 hours as soon as the symptoms of itching, pain or blisters begin to appear. But besides the ointments there are small adhesives that can cover the wounds, preventing the spread of herpes and avoiding the contamination of other people.

In more severe cases, where the herpes takes more than 10 days to disappear, the doctor may also recommend the use of antiviral pills, to speed up treatment and prevent relapses.

Herpes is an unhealed Herpes simplex virus infection that manifests itself through painful blisters in the mouth that last about 7 to 10 days. This is a contagious disease, which is transmitted by direct contact with the blisters or fluid, so as long as symptoms are evident, kisses should be avoided, especially in babies, as they can be life-threatening. In addition, it should be noted that the person may also contaminate glasses, cutlery and towels that come into contact with the wounds.

 Lip herpes: How to treat cold sores faster

1. Ointments

The treatment for cold sores can be directed by a general practitioner or pharmacist and is usually done with ointments such as:

  • Zovirax (acyclovir), which should be applied every 4 hours for about 7 days;
  • Dermacerium HS gel (silver sulfadiazine + cerium nitrate), which should be applied about 3 times daily until the wounds are completely healed;
  • Penvir lip (penciclovir), which should be applied every 2 hours for about 4 days;

During treatment, the person should take care not to contaminate anyone and therefore should not touch their lips to other people and should always dry with their own towel and should not share glasses and cutlery.

2. Liquid lotions

As an alternative to ointments, a liquid wound lotion may be used, which can help to heal and relieve the pain caused by herpes. In addition, this adhesive also prevents contamination and the proliferation of the virus and is transparent and therefore very discreet.

An example of a liquid lotion is Urgo Filmogel Cold Sore , which can be applied 2 to 4 times a day.

3. Pills

Oral antiviral medication may be used in more severe cases and in immunocompromised persons who are at risk of developing complications. In addition, they can also be used as long-term treatment to prevent relapses, but only if recommended by your doctor.

The most commonly used medication for the treatment of cold sores are Acyclovir (Zovirax), Valacyclovir (Valtrex) and Fanciclovir (Famvir).

4. Homemade remedy

This home treatment that can be used as a supplement to the treatment prescribed by your doctor and consists of eating 1 clove of raw garlic a day. These cautions should be started early on at the first signs of herpes and should be maintained until it is cured. In addition, other home remedies prepared with Jambú and Lemon Balm, for example, can also help cure mouth blisters faster.

How to treat recurrent lip herpes

In the case of recurrent cold sores, which manifests more than 5 times in the same year, treatment should be done by applying an ointment indicated by a doctor, such as Zovirax. This treatment should be started as soon as the patient begins to feel itching in the region of the lip and to avoid the onset of herpes so often it is recommended:

  • Avoid excessive stress and anxiety;
  • Moisturize lips, especially when it is very cold;
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure and put sunscreen on the lips.

Although cold sores disappear completely after treatment, it can recur several times over your lifespan, especially in times of increased stress or when the person is more exposed to the sun, such as during a vacation, for example.

Another way to decrease the frequency of herpes is to take a lysine supplement in pill form. Simply take 1 or 2 pills of 500 mg a day for 3 months, or as directed by a dermatologist or pharmacist. The capsules should be taken when the herpes lesions are improving, and will prevent them from manifesting again, also decreasing their intensity. These pills can be purchased at pharmacies, drugstores or health food stores.

In addition, in some cases your doctor may also recommend oral antiviral treatment.

How is treatment done during pregnancy

The treatment of cold sores during pregnancy and during breastfeeding should be done with caution, so you should go to the doctor so he can indicate medication that is not harmful to your baby. A good option is to use liquid lotions to treat the wounds, which have no antiviral in their composition and are equally effective.

In addition, home remedies such as propolis also promote healing of herpes sores and help relieve inflammation.

Signs of improvement in cold sores appear around 4 days after initiation of treatment and include decreased itching, reduced redness, and wound healing and blistering in the mouth. Signs of worsening of cold sores are more frequent in patients who are not properly treated and include the appearance of herpes sores on other areas of the lips, inside the mouth and pain when chewing and swallowing, for example.
